Mindfulness is a CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) that focuses on being in the present moment. It draws heavily on the Buddhist concept that the mind has three tenses: The past, the present and the future.

Most people tend to live in the past or the future and miss out on the present. An example of this is, if somebody experiences a traumatic event in their lives, such as a visit to the dentist. The next time they visit the dentist, the mind replays that same trauma, bringing with it the same feelings experienced at the earlier time. The reality of the situation (the present) is that the actual experience is usualy a lot less traumatic than they imagined it would be.
